Football for the Goals is a United Nations initiative that provides a platform for the global football community to engage with and advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is an opportunity to build on football’s powerful and influential reach and to work together to become agents of change by aligning messaging, strategies, and operations with the aspirations of the SDGs.
This initiative will inspire and guide the world of football – from confederations, national associations, leagues and clubs, to players’ associations, organized fan groups, as well as media and commercial partners – to build on existing sustainability approaches and to implement SDG strategies that lead to behavioural change.
In 2022, Cultures United F.C. was selected to be part of the initiative, being the first organization in the state of Washington to be recognized for its efforts in the community.
PepsiCo Team of Champions is a national purpose platform providing the gift of the game to underserved and underrepresented soccer communities across the United States. The $1 million commitment makes actionable investments on and off the field to help create transformational change for Hispanic and Black youth, with an additional focus on bringing more women to the sport.
Pitch for Hope is an initiative by Chelsea Football Club aimed at combating the widespread phenomenon of racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, and any other kind of discrimination in sports.
CUFC was selected as a finalist in 2019, and winning the award gave us the chance to bring our vision to life. Discrimination can take many forms, both on and off the pitch. By harnessing the spirit of sports, we hope to combat all forms of discrimination and build bridges that unify people of different religious, ethnic, and national backgrounds.
"Working with kids, letting them know that they’re accepted and that there’s a place for them at Cultures United is one of the many facets that the club was founded on. Seeing kids come out to the field excited to play"
"The region is home to a unique soccer culture, where clubs – often made up of marginalised folk – come together through the sport to promote diversity, strengthen community bonds and have a good time."
The club’s coaches and players operate free soccer camps at parks across the South End, supported by the Sounders’ charitable arm, the RAVE Foundation. They also help run an after-school soccer program for students at White Center Heights Elementary, partnering with teachers at the school.
The soccer program has “changed the culture of our school for the better” by helping kids connect outside of class, and Cultures United coaches and players have become role models.
